Iron Residues

Until now, metallurgical slag has been considered waste, yet transforming it into commercial products holds the potential to address environmental concerns and significantly boost the profitability of producers, presenting a highly lucrative business opportunity.

Investors often lack awareness of the industrial technologies that can unlock the value of these materials. The challenge lies in realizing marketable products from slags, which contain a wealth of magnetic and non-magnetic metals, including iron, aluminum, magnesium, copper, chromium, nickel, titanium, vanadium, and rare earth elements.

Unfortunately, much of this wealth is currently discarded. The development of a technology for the comprehensive processing of both natural and technogenic raw materials in a vortex air-mineral flow aims to change this narrative. The process doesn't require water, flotation reagents, or other separation chemicals, and it generates no enrichment waste.

Key Aspects:

  • Processing of metallurgical slags from Kryvorizhstal, Dneprospetsstal, and Makeevka plant in Ukraine, resulting in total Fe ~ 99% and Fe oxides ~ 53-60%.
  • Waste processing from the Production Association Southern Machine-Building Plant in Ukraine, extracting Fe, Ni, and Mn.
  • Processing of waste from the Nikopol ferro-alloy plant in Ukraine and Tulachermet in Russia to obtain FeMn and FeV.

The energy consumption for processing one ton of waste is less than 25 kWh.The flexibility of the technology allows recycling and separating waste irrespective of time and location, without being hindered by extreme temperatures.

The technology ensures 100% processing of all waste components without the need for waste rock dumps, and it provides the opportunity to use fractions purified from metals as valuable raw materials for obtaining building materials.

In our laboratory facility, we successfully tested the technology on the waste products from Ukrainian industrial enterprises during the enrichment of semi-oxidized and oxidized quartzites, resulting in the production of iron ore concentrate with a total Fe content of 67-68%.

The technological capabilities for the dry enrichment of mineral raw materials, facilitated by the unique design features of mills and a magnetic separator, allow for the complete processing of slags with mineral extraction and no generation of new waste—a feat unmatched by any known technology. Additionally, if other minerals, such as rare earth metals, are discovered in the waste, the line can be easily reconfigured to extract them.
